The University of Southern California Lusk Center for Real Estate, a nationally-renowned real estate research center, has appointed Rodney Ramcharan as its research director. Ramcharan has also been named associate professor of real estate and public policy at the USC Sol Price School of Public Policy.

At the Lusk Center, Ramcharan replaces Gary Painter, who was recently named director of social policy for the USC Sol Price Center for Social Innovation.

“The national and world economies are at a critical juncture and I can think of no one more qualified to lead the Lusk Center’s ongoing analysis of how real estate is performing as our primary economic driver,” said Raphael Bostic, interim director of the Lusk Center. “His research on major lenders and emerging global markets is particularly valuable to the center’s mission of informing the global practice of real estate.”

Previously, Ramcharan served on the Board Governors of the Federal Reserve System for the last five years as the chief of the Systemic Financial Institutions and Markets Section. He was also the United States representative on the Basel Research Task Force, and the Federal Reserve’s representative on the Basel Large Exposures Working Group.

In those positions, he studied the impact of large financial institutions on the U.S. economy. These analyses have helped to inform regulatory policy discussions at both the Federal Reserve and Basel. Ramcharan also worked for the International Monetary Fund for 10 years during which he contributed to discussions on exchange rates and monetary policy in emerging markets such as South Africa and other developing economies.

“It’s an honor to be part of one the world’s preeminent real estate research centers,” Ramcharan said. “I look forward to exploring new research areas and developing new knowledge that supports real estate practitioners and informs policymakers on issues that affect housing, commercial real estate and the urban economy.”
