Bloomberg BNA Outlook Predicts Moderate Economic Growth in 2013

A strengthening private sector should give the economy a boost in the second half of 2013 after a slow start, according to Bloomberg BNA's annual Economic Outlook. The forecast--a consensus projection from economists at 21 leading financial, consulting, and academic organizations across the country--calls for a temporary slowdown in economic growth in the first half of the year as the country feels the impacts of the payroll tax hike and other major shifts in federal fiscal policy.

Senator Pens Letter Urging Simplification of Mortgage Rules

U.S. Senator and Senate Banking Committee member Bob Corker (R-Tennessee) warned federal regulators Tuesday to stick to simplified, synchronized lending rules in order to avoid driving out private capital. Corker specifically pointed to the qualified residential mortgage (QRM) rule, which includes an exemption on risk retention for loans sold to Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and the Federal Housing Administration (FHA)--an exemption Corker believes may drive lenders away from the private market.

MBA: Slow Growth Still Expected Despite Positive Signs

Washington may have (arguably) successfully avoided 2013's budgetary landmines so far, but the Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA) reports everything it has seen so far suggests economic growth will be modest in 2013. In its most recent Economic and Mortgage Finance Commentary, the association forecasts slow economic gains in the first half of 2013 "as the effects of the payroll tax increase and the spending cuts from sequestration or a similar decline in government spending kicks in."

Regulators Unveil Appraisal Rules for Lenders

Starting in January 2014, mortgage lenders will work under new rules governing the handling of appraisals and other home value estimates. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) announced Friday the adoption of a new rule intended to improve consumer access to appraisal reports. In addition, the CFPB (in partnership with five other federal regulatory agencies) issued a rule establishing specific appraisal requirements for higher-priced mortgage loans and properties flipped within six months of purchase.

The Federal Reserve announced it paid a record $88.9 billion to Treasury in 2012. The earnings are from Fed programs that were introduced to stimulate the economy and involve the purchase of billions in mortgage-backed securities (MBS) each month to keep interest rates down.

AIG Board Meets to Consider Suit Against U.S. Government

After some consideration, the board of American International Group (AIG) announced Wednesday the company will not be joining in a lawsuit brought by one of its former executives against the U.S. government. The New York Times first reported Monday that AIG's board was mulling over its options regarding a $25 billion lawsuit filed by Starr International Company on behalf of AIG shareholders and spearheaded by former AIG CEO Maurice "Hank" Greenberg (now the CEO of Starr).

155K Jobs Added in December, Unemployment Rate Flat at 7.8%

The nation├â┬ó├óÔÇÜ┬¼├óÔÇ×┬ós unemployment rate remained at 7.8 percent in December as payrolls increased 155,000, slightly ahead of consensus forecasts, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported Friday. Economists had forecast payrolls would grow by 150,000, slightly higher than the 146,000 increase in payrolls originally reported for November, and that the unemployment rate would remain at November├â┬ó├óÔÇÜ┬¼├óÔÇ×┬ós 7.7 percent.
