At the Five Star Conference 2021 in Dallas in September, the women who are making a difference in the industry and making a mark on their colleagues and peers were honored by the Five Star Institute.
As we have in year’s past, MReport is taking the chance to shine a spotlight on these professionals, showcasing Ramie Word, SVP of Customer Care & Client Delivery, Mr. Cooper, winner of the 2021 Excellence in Mentorship Award. This Award recognizes women executives who have gone the extra mile to pass on their knowledge and “pay it forward” by helping guide the next generation of female mortgage leaders (nominees for this honor must have a minimum of 10 years of consecutive industry experience).

What does this nomination mean to you and what makes you a good pick for this category?
Word: I am honored to be nominated in this category because mentorship has been close to my heart throughout my career with Mr. Cooper. I’ve had so many meaningful leaders that have helped me develop my own leadership style and driven me further than I thought possible. It’s been important to me to pay that experience forward with our future leaders. It’s so critical to have a safe space and sounding board for our up-and-coming female leadership. I want to lead by example towards a more diverse and equitable culture within our industry. I feel a sense of responsibility as a female leader to make sure I’m supporting our future executives. From a selfish perspective, it’s extremely satisfying to see so many of the ‘mentees’ I’ve spent time with journey down their own path of success and rise to the challenge.”
What are your proudest career achievements thus far?
Word: This award is definitely up there at the top. I’m proud to have been recognized every year for the last seven years as a female leader within the industry. I’m also extremely proud of the career growth of those under me and around me over the last several years. I’m also a proud supporter and ambassador for our Cooper culture and D&I growth.
Are there any women who have served as career mentors for you, and what did you learn from them?
Word: Courtney Ehinger (SVP, Performing Servicing, Mr. Cooper) is a big one. She’s one of only two females I’ve worked for in the last 18 years. She’s strong, confident, and knowledgeable about her processes. She isn’t afraid to grab a seat at the table, even when the chairs may all be taken.
What is the most critical piece of advice you would give to women beginning their career in this industry?
Word: Be confident in who you are and what you bring to the table. Never say no to a new opportunity. Don’t limit yourselves because you feel like you have to choose between your work or family. You can do it all!
