Treasury to Host Live Twitter Chat on Financial Literacy for Homeowners

computer-with-channelsThe U.S. Department of the Treasury will host a live Twitter Chat on Tuesday, April 28, at 3 p.m. eastern to help spread the word about financial literacy for homebuyers and homeowners.

Get Financially Fit In and Around Your Home” rounds out National Financial Literacy Month with a discussion on what prospective homebuyers can learn and what existing homeowners can do to bring down expenses.

Several federal agencies will discuss resources available through government programs and tips for saving money around your home and teach a few habits to benefit long-term financial wellness.

Representatives from the Treasury’s Making Home Affordable program will present ways to save your home if you’re having trouble paying your mortgage; the Department of Housing and Urban Development will talk about the steps involved in purchasing a home and the importance of housing counseling; the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau will discuss protections in place for homeowners and information around shopping for a mortgage; representatives from the Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star program will present ways to save on household bills in several ways; and the Federal Trade Commission will speak about ways homeowners and buyers can avoid mortgage-related scams.

Understanding these key topics will help equip you to become financially fit, according to Mark McArdle, chief of the Homeownership Preservation Office at Treasury.

“Treasury believes that financial literacy and equipping homeowners with the information they need to maintain their home will help families build wealth and create sustainable homeownership,” McArdle said. “We are excited to partner with other government agencies to help educate consumers about mortgage-related resources available through government programs.”

Anyone can follow along with the conversation and tweet questions using the hashtag #GovFinChat. For more information, visit Making Home Affordable online.
