HUD Secretary Julián Castro, whose name has been tossed around for months as a possible running mate with Hillary Clinton on the Democratic presidential ticket, has spoken out against the likely Republican presidential nominee, Donald Trump, and his policies in a recent interview with entertainment magazine Billboard.
Castro, whose grandmother immigrated to the United States from Mexico in the 1920s along with her sister, reserved much of his criticism for Trump’s stance on immigration.
“As a country we need to turn in a more constructive direction than Donald Trump is trying to lead us,” Castro told the magazine. “He has unleashed prejudice in a way that we haven’t seen in quite a while.”
Castro also said of Trump’s policies, “This is a view from a person who’s just not right or not appropriate to be president of the United States” and “If we had done what Donald Trump wants us to do ... if we had done that generations ago, we wouldn’t be nearly the caliber of country that we are today. It’s a wrong-headed policy. It’s laughable.”
But in the end, Castro said he isn’t concerned with what Trump says because “I don’t believe he’s going to get elected.”
“He has unleashed prejudice in a way that we haven’t seen in quite a while.”

Castro has publicly endorsed Clinton and has been rumored for months to be a frontrunner for vice president if she should win the Democratic nomination. He has always deflected questions about whether or not he would be Clinton's running mate, however. When asked by DS News in a February interview if he could consider a higher political position if offered the opportunity, Castro said, “Oh, I doubt it. . .I fully expect to be back in Texas a year from now.”
Trump and the other Republican candidates have been silent about housing policy during their campaigns while both Clinton and the other Democratic candidate, Bernie Sanders, have both unveiled plans for reforming housing policy as part of their presidential campaigns.
