Mortgage Delinquency Shows Continued Improvement in Q3

The national mortgage delinquency rate fell further in Q3 2012 to 5.41 percent, TransUnion reported Tuesday. The Q3 rate is a decrease from 5.49 percent in Q2 2012 and a near 8 percent drop from 5.88 percent in Q3 2011, according to the credit bureau. While the national delinquency rate has been making progress, Tim Martin, group VP of U.S. housing in TransUnion's financial services business unit, said, "we still have a long way to go to reach more 'normal' conditions of a delinquency rate in the 1-2% range for the U.S. average."

LPS: Early-Stage Delinquencies Drive Up September Total

Mortgage loan delinquencies increased 7.72 percent from August to September--the largest monthly increase since 2008, according to a report from Lender Processing Services (LPS). The upturn was substantial, even for a month historically marked by seasonal rises in delinquency, LPS said. However, company analysts say it is important to look at the longer-term trend, which shows a significant decrease in the delinquency rate since its January 2010 peak.

Unemployment Rate Inches Up Even as Jobs Numbers Increase

The nation├â┬ó├óÔÇÜ┬¼├óÔÇ×┬ós unemployment rate inched up to 7.9 percent in October, even as the economy added 171,000 jobs, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Friday. The labor force--the sum of employed and unemployed--improved in October, causing the bump in the unemployment rate and signaling renewed confidence among those on the sidelines that jobs are available. With its mixed results, the report provides fodder for both President Barack Obama and Governor Mitt Romney four days before Election Day.

Equifax: Home Equity Credit Hits Three-Year High

Home equity revolving credit hit a three-year high in July, signaling continued growth in housing confidence, Equifax said in a report. The company's October National Consumer Credit Trends Report showed new home equity revolving lines of credit totaled more than $44 billion year-to-date through July. First mortgages contracted 3.4 percent year-over-year, but severely delinquent mortgages have also fallen off since their peak, reaching a total balance of $419 billion in September.

Equifax Reaches Settlement on Charges of Selling Consumer Information

The FTC alleges Equifax sold more than 17,000 lists of people who met specific criteria, such as being late on their mortgage payments. Equifax is said to have sold the lists to Direct Lending Source, Inc., which in turn sold the lists to other third parties. The lists included information such as credit scores and detailed how many days past due consumers' mortgage payments were.

Risk Managers Share Positive Outlook for Mortgage, Equity Loans

Optimism among bankers continued to rise in the year's third quarter, according to survey results released by the Professional Risk Managers' International Association (PRMIA). The survey, conducted by PRMIA for FICO, showed that the majority of bank risk professionals expect mortgage loan delinquency to either fall or remain the same. PRMIA called the drop in delinquency predictions "encouraging," as sentiment on delinquency usually experiences a dip in the third quarter.
