Morgan Stanley is the latest institution to settle claims that the firm misrepresented residential mortgage-backed securities that were sold prior to the financial crisis in 2008.

Investment banking firm Morgan Stanley’s net revenues for the third quarter of 2015 were down by more than $1 billion from Q3 2014, according to the firm’s Q3 2015 earnings statement released Monday.

Net revenues for Morgan Stanley reached $9.7 billion for the second quarter ending June 30, 2015, compared with $9.9 billion in the first quarter of 2015, and $8.6 billion a year ago, according to the company’s second quarter earnings statement released Monday.

CoStar, a research organization, reported that single family rental (SFR) property acquisition is geographically shifting as home prices stabilize and credit conditions ease. Investors have also become more selective in which properties to buy and are more focused on managing their properties, collecting rents, and improving operations.

The firm also repurchased approximately 7 million shares‒‒worth about $250 million‒‒of its common stock in the quarter. According to the statement, Morgan Stanley stock leapt from 74 cents per share to $1.18 between the first quarters of 2014 and 2015. The firm plans to repurchase as much as $3.1 billion of common stock through the end of Q2 2016.

FHFA, which is suing on behalf of the RMBS pools' trustees, claims that Morgan Stanley committed a breach of contract by failing to buy back the poor performing loans, which were pooled into securities and sold to Freddie Mac in 2007, according to reports.

Morgan Stanley's third quarter 2014 net revenues of $8.9 billion marked an increase from $8.0 billion from the same period a year ago, the investment bank reported in its Q3 2014 earnings statement released on Friday. Morgan Stanley's net income for Q3 2014, including discontinued operations, was reported at $1.7 billion.

Morgan Stanley has agreed to pay $95 million to settle a lawsuit alleging it misled investors in securities purchases prior to the financial crisis. The plaintiffs alleged in the suit had alleged that Morgan Stanley violated U.S. securities law in a total of 29 mortgage-backed securities it packaged and sold in 2006 and 2007.
