Credit Union Earnings Rise to All-Time High in 2012

Federally insured credit unions brought in record-high earnings last year, the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) reported. NCUA reported earnings of $8.5 billion across the industry in 2012, the highest annual figure ever posted. Earnings last year were 36.1 percent higher from the $6.3 billion reported in 2011. The rise in earnings came largely from reductions in loan loss reserves, "a positive sign of improving economic conditions," NCUA said in a release.

Freddie Mac Posts $11B Profit in 2012

Freddie Mac's net profit for 2012 totaled $11 billion, a marked turnaround from 2011's net loss of $5.3 billion. According to the company's earnings release, the increase reflects a decrease in delinquent single-family loans, improved national home prices, and a higher income tax benefit. Freddie Mac CEO Donald Layton attributed the reversal to last year's strengthened housing market and the company's efforts to "minimize legacy losses and build a strong book of business."

FDIC Institutions Report Increased Earnings

Institutions insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) recorded their second-highest annual earnings ever in 2012, according to the FDIC's Quarterly Banking Profile for the fourth quarter of 2012. High noninterest income and declining loan loss provisions contributed to the increase, according to the FDIC. Net income for all FDIC-insured institutions over the year was $141.3 billion, a 19.3 percent increase from net income recorded in 2011.

Ally Reports Net Profit in 2012 After Cutting Mortgage Weight

Ally Financial reported net income of $1.4 billion for 2012's last quarter as the bank continues to shift away from the mortgage business. Last quarter's $1.4 billion income was a marked turnaround from the net loss of $206 million reported at the end of 2011. For the entire year, Ally recorded a net income of $1.2 billion compared to a net loss of $157 million in 2011. According to the bank's quarterly earnings report, performance was largely "affected by strong on sale revenue in Mortgage Operations."

BofA, Citigroup Reveal Troubles in Q4 Earnings

Bank of America and Citigroup both released their fourth-quarter earnings Thursday, revealing the scars their legacy mortgage issues have left. BofA reported net income of $732 million, a significant decline from $2 billion in Q4 2011. The bank did better on a year-long scale, coming in at $4.2 billion (well above its $1.4 billion income in 2011). Legal expenses also weighed down profits at Citigroup, though the company did manage to come out ahead on a yearly basis with a $1.2 billion profit in Q4.

JPMorgan Reports Record Profit for Third Straight Year

According to its quarterly filing, JPMorgan took in $5.7 billion in net income during 2012's final quarter, up 53 percent from the same quarter in 2011. Revenue for the quarter was $24.4 billion, up 10 percent compared with the prior year. Much of that profit came on the bank of JPMorgan's strengthened mortgage business. The bank's mortgage banking division reported originations of $51.2 billion in Q4, up 33 percent year-over-year and 8 percent quarter-over-quarter.

GDP Growth Revised to 3.1% for Q3, Corporate Profits Surge

Real GDP growth for the third quarter was revised up again, the Bureau of Economic Analysis reported Thursday, reaching a 3.1 percent annualized growth rate. The report on GDP was the third of three monthly reports tracking the broadest measure of the nation's economic health. GDP growth of 3.0 percent is considered "trend," with above-trend growth suggesting favorable conditions for hiring. In the same report, BEA said corporate profits rose $45.7 billion in the third quarter, more than double the increase in the second quarter.
