Mortgage Litigation Up in Q1, Consumer Claims Dominate

Mortgage-related litigation remained historically high in the first quarter, according to data from Mortgage Daily. The site's First Quarter 2013 Mortgage Litigation Index shows there were 227 mortgage-related cases tracked that saw activity in Q1--little changed from Q4 2012's 223 but up from 216 the year prior. Cases related to mortgage-backed securities, regulation, commercial mortgages, and investor problems all saw increased activity.

OCC Deputy Stresses Importance of Multifaceted Risk Management

At an industry event held in Phoenix, Darrin Benhart, deputy comptroller for credit and market risk at the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, described the changing face of risk management as the mortgage industry adapts to increased regulation. "As you well know, the list of mortgage-related reforms is extensive," Benhart said. "These reforms mean you will need an even greater emphasis on risk management techniques that not only look at credit risk but also encompass operational and compliance risk."

Initial Jobless Claims At 7 1/2-Year Low

Unemployment

First-time claims for unemployment insurance for the week ending September 7 plunged 31,000 to 292,000, the lowest level since March 2006, the Labor Department reported Thursday. Economists expected the number of claims to edge up to 330,000 from the 323,000 originally reported for the week ending August 31. The number of filings for that week was unchanged.

Report: 2.5M Homes Return to Positive Equity in Q2

The number of mortgaged residential properties with negative equity fell more than five percentage points throughout the year's second quarter, CoreLogic reported Tuesday. According to the company's analysis, approximately 2.5 million residential properties returned to a state of positive equity last quarter, bringing the total number to 41.5 million. Meanwhile, 7.1 million homes--or 14.5 percent of all residential properties with a mortgage--were still in negative equity.
