Redfin: Sellers Showing More Faith in Market

According to responses collected by Redfin, 45 percent of sellers believe now is a good time to sell, up from just 22 percent in the first quarter and 15 percent in last year's fourth quarter. At the same time, 44 percent say now is a good time buy, down from 54 percent last quarter. Having survived the slower cold season, homeowners were also a little more optimistic about future home price increases. Seventy percent of those surveyed expect prices will rise "a little" in their area in the next year, while 15 percent anticipate prices will rise "a lot."

Consumer Sentiment Slips in April, Matches Year-Ago Level

The Survey of Consumers Index of Consumer Sentiment dropped a bit from March to April but stayed level on a yearly basis, according to the latest release. The overall index declined to 76.4 from 78.6 in March, a drop of 2.8 percent. April 2012's index also read 76.4. According to Survey of Consumers, most of April's loss was in how consumers viewed future economic prospects: "In particular, consumers were less optimistic about the ability of the economy to continue to expand without a renewed downturn sometime in the next five years."

Mortgage Fraud Risk Rises, Spreads East in 2012

Mortgage fraud risk saw a slight increase last year, with the largest concentration located in the eastern half of the country, Interthinx revealed in its annual Mortgage Fraud Risk Report. According to the yearly report--based on analysis of loan applications processed throughout 2012 by Interthinx's FraudGUARD system--the 2012 Annual Mortgage Fraud Index was 150, a 3.4 percent rise from 2011's index reading of 145. The firm also observed a notable shift in fraud risk from west to east.

Zillow: Q1 Home Values See ‘Sustainable’ Growth

Zillow's Home Value Index (HVI) rose to $157,600 as of the end of Q1, up 0.5 percent over Q4 2012 and 5.1 percent over the same time last year. Quarterly home value appreciation in the fourth quarter was 2.1 percent--indicating the market is slowing down to a more sustainable pace, says Zillow chief economist Dr. Stan Humphries. Looking ahead, the company's Home Value Forecast shows national home values rising 3.2 percent through March 2014, an annual appreciation rate in line with historic norms.

DataQuick: California Home Sales, Prices Shoot Up in March

An estimated 37,764 new and resale houses and condos sold statewide in California in March--a monthly increase of 31.5 percent, according to information released by San Diego-based DataQuick. March's sales numbers also came in 0.8 percent above March 2012's 37,481, DataQuick reported.

FHFA House Price Index Up 7.1% in February

The Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) released Tuesday its House Price Index (HPI) for February, revealing home prices rose 0.7 percent month-over-month on a seasonally adjusted basis. Year-over-year, U.S. house prices were up 7.1 percent. As of February, the U.S. index rested at 196.3, 13.6 percent below its peak in April 2007 and was roughly the same as its October 2004 reading. FHFA's index has not declined on a monthly basis since January 2012.

New Home Sales Rise in March as Prices Plummet

After experiencing the sharpest drop in two years in February, new home sales increased 1.5 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 417,000 in March, the Census Bureau and HUD reported Tuesday. Economists surveyed by Bloomberg expected March sales to increase to 419,000 from a February's originally reported 411,000. The median price of a new home, according to the Census-HUD report, plunged $17,900 (or 6.8 percent) in March to $247,000, the largest month-over-month decline since February 2011.
