JPMorgan Reports Record Profit for Third Straight Year

According to its quarterly filing, JPMorgan took in $5.7 billion in net income during 2012's final quarter, up 53 percent from the same quarter in 2011. Revenue for the quarter was $24.4 billion, up 10 percent compared with the prior year. Much of that profit came on the bank of JPMorgan's strengthened mortgage business. The bank's mortgage banking division reported originations of $51.2 billion in Q4, up 33 percent year-over-year and 8 percent quarter-over-quarter.

Report: BofA Planning to Unload Another $100B in Servicing Rights

After announcing Monday the sale of nearly $306 billion in mortgage servicing rights (MSRs) on 2 million loans, Bank of America might be looking to unload a little more. Reuters first reported Tuesday that the bank is planning to sell rights on at least another $100 billion of mortgages. BofA is likely to announce more MSR sales in the next several weeks, according to two unnamed sources who spoke to Reuters. Sales of servicing rights have become more prevalent as costs rise and servicers fall to bankruptcy, leaving hungry institutions to purchase their MSRs.

JPMorgan Seeks Dismissal of Task Force Securities Suit

It's been months since New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman filed suit against JPMorgan Chase over faulty mortgage-backed securities (MBS), but the bank is now coming out of its own corner swinging. Attorneys for the bank filed a motion to dismiss in early January, arguing that because Schneiderman brought his claims under the Martin Act (an article granting the attorney general increased power to combat financial fraud), they are subject to a three-year statute of limitations that has already elapsed.

MBA Assembles GSE Single-Family Task Force

The Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA) has assembled a GSE Single Family Task Force to revisit the association's 2009 proposal for the future of the secondary market and to further discourse on this topic. The task force will work in two phases. First, they will review the 2009 position and determine potential issues during a transition. Next, they will put together a "roadmap" for the transition.

NCUA Files Largest Suit Yet Against JPMorgan, Bear Stearns

The National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) announced Monday it has filed suit against JPMorgan Securities and Bear Stearns over allegations of falsely representing the quality of mortgage-backed securities (MBS) sold to corporate credit unions. NCUA's complaint alleges that although Bear Stearns' offering documents described the firm's adherence to underwriting guidelines, the originators had in fact "systematically abandoned the stated underwriting guidelines in the Offering Documents."

Mortgage Employment Increases in Q3

Hiring in the mortgage industry increased in Q3 for the fifth straight quarter, according to Mortgage Daily's Mortgage Employment Index. The index shows 8,711 hires were made in the year's third quarter, up more than 3,000 from the last quarter and nearly 3,500 from Q3 2011. Even with an estimated 5,785 layoffs, the industry saw a net increase of nearly 3,000 jobs--more than double the gain in Q2. For 2012's first three quarters, mortgage and real estate finance companies recruited 7,230 more people than they've laid off.

JPMorgan Chase's leadership team is undergoing a few changes: The bank announced that effective early next year, Marianne Lake will be stepping into the role of CFO. Meanwhile, current CFO Doug Braunstein will become vice chairman of the company.
