Wells Fargo Loses Bid to Dismiss FHA Lawsuit

A federal appeals court has rejected an attempt by Wells Fargo to block a government suit alleging the bank falsely certified the underwriting credit of loans it originated as a direct endorsement lender for the Federal Housing Administration (FHA). In its attempt to have the suit dismissed, Wells Fargo argued the agreement outlined in 2012's National Mortgage Settlement barred the types of claims the government is now making.

Despite Declines, Originator Rankings Little Changed in Q1

The decline in mortgage production in the year's opening months failed to produce any names to the list of top lenders for the quarter, but it did shake up the rankings a bit. Wells Fargo's April data suggests consumer sentiment slipped in Florida one point to 79 for the month, largely due to increased concerns about current economic conditions. The concern, both locally and nationally, outweighed a slight increase in confidence about future conditions for the economy as a whole. The Florida index largely reflected the nation's attitude, with the overall index dropping slightly to 82.3.

FHLBank Advances Surging Among Largest Institutions

Secured loans, or advances, from the Federal Home Loan Banks system to lenders dried up significantly after the market crash of 2008, when the loans peaked at about $1 trillion. But since then, advances have risen to $492 billion, largely due to a flood of secured loans to the system's four largest members—JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo, Bank of America, and Citibank. These lenders accounted for $135 billion of the contributions through 2013.
